VAST

Know your business. Lead your team.
The VAST Framework is the strategic backbone of the Total Engagement System. Developed by former Air Force fighter pilot and transformation expert, Brian “Maddog” Maddocks, VAST gives leaders the tools they need to understand how their business really works so they can communicate clearly and lead decisively.
“Any strategy is dead on arrival if the people who have to carry it out don’t understand it.”
- Patrick Lencioni, The Five Dysfunctions of a Team

What is VAST?

VAST is leadership in context and the architecture of engagement.  It’s a structured way to understand the business machine you’re flying and the business space you’re navigating.  This clarity is the key to initiative and empowered execution.

The VAST Strategy Framework has four interlocking components:

Lead Strategically
Most managers operate at the tactical level. They’re doing things right, but doing things right isn’t enough. You have to do the right things. That only happens when actions are aligned with objectives; when commitment is aligned with context. We’ve distilled the context of leadership into four components—Value, Activates, Systems, and Targets—that form the strategic architecture for building engagement.

Engagement is the difference between winning and losing.

How VAST Works

VAST is the Architecture of Engagement. It can be used to design a business from the bottom up or understand a business from the top down. VAST uses Systems Engineering to create the Context of Leadership.

Value

The organization’s value proposition

Value

The value proposition consists of: Mission – the “Why?” Vision – the “Why not?” Impact – the “So what?” Customers – the “Who cares?” Competition – the “Why me?”

Activities

Business processes that create the Value

Activities

The What. What the organization does to create value, regardless of how. Mapping business Activities is critical to understanding the problem before solving it. Do the right thing…(to Systems)

Systems

People and tools that execute the Activities

Systems

The How. Systems are the people that perform the Activities, the tools they use, and the way they all fit together. Well-designed systems create flow; poorly designed ones create friction. (from Activates)…then do the thing right.

Targets

Financial goals and Key Performance Indicators

Targets

The metrics. Financial results matter, but they’re lagging indicators. To truly understand the business machine, define actionable Key Performance Indicators that drive real-time execution.
